EMS Locals Reach a Tentative Pact With the City

EMS workers will receive a 10.41 percent compounded wage increase over the term of a tentative new contract negotiated by the union and the city.

The new contract, which covers members in Uniformed EMTs and Paramedics Local 2507 and Uniformed EMS Officers Local 3621, runs from March 3, 2010, to April 5, 2018.

Local 2507 and Local 3621 members, who have worked without a raise since 2009, will see their base salaries increase by 1.5 percent wage increase on March 6, 2015; 2.5 percent on March 6, 2016; 3 percent on March 2017 and 3.03 percent on Sept. 5, 2017. With compounding, the increases boost workers’ base salary by 10.41 percent.

Upon ratification of the new contract agreement, members will receive a pensionable $1,000 bonus. An independent monitor will oversee the mail-ballot vote.

“We’re happy with this contract,” said Local 3621 President Vincent Variale. “Now there’s an extra incentive for our members to get a promotion and move up the career ladder,” referring to the new pay restructuring of the officer salaries that addressed the pay compression between the two locals.

Fire Protection Inspectors, new to Local 2507, will receive an annuity with an annual $261 contribution from the employer.

Their work week will increase from 35 hours to 37.5 hours, resulting in a 7.14 percent increase to their annual salaries.   In 2017, the Inspectors’ 10-year longevity will increase from $1,556 to $2,000 and the 15-year longevity will be adjusted from $1,556 to $2,500.

Beginning on Sept. 6, 2017, EMTs and Paramedics who work in HazTac units will receive assignment differentials. Base salaries will increase by 3 percent in the first year of assignment and then to 6 percent in the second year.

Local 2507 and Local 3621 will have the opportunity to participate in a gain-sharing initiative with management. Union members will receive shared compensation for savings identified by the labor-management group.

The contract will adjust the current 20-year longevity increase of Local 3621 from $3,449 to $5,609 on Sept. 6, 2017.

After ratification of the contract both Local’s will be part of a 12-hour tour pilot program that will provide for every other weekend off and result in cost savings and productivity gains.

In addition to Variale, Local 2507 President Israel Miranda and officers of the two locals, the union’s negotiating team included from DC 37 Associate General Counsel Steven Sykes and Research and Negotiations Assistant Director Maria Elena Cortez.
