Memorial Sloan-Kettering Men’s Health Awareness Month: Prostate Cancer Screening and Early Detection
Dear DC 37 Member,
June is Men’s Health Awareness Month. For many men, the fear of prostate cancer is overwhelming. MSK Direct has developed prostate screening educational materials to encourage early prostate screening for males over age 45. Learning about the risk factors associated with developing prostate cancer, such as age, family history, and race/ethnicity can help lower fear and uncertainty commonly associated with this disease.
Prostate cancer is more common among African Americans. TV anchor Al Roker discussed his own prostate cancer experience, disparities in cancer care and the importance of cancer screening for Black men with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s (MSK) Chief Health Equity Officer Dr. Carol Brown in this video.
Fortunately, a PSA test can also help find prostate cancer early, and men over age 45 should talk with their primary care provider about the risks and benefits of a PSA screening to determine a screening schedule that is right for them. To learn more:
- MSK Direct has developed prostate screening education here.
- In addition, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) will hold a live virtual discussion on Wednesday, June 16, from 6-7 p.m., where a panel of experts will answer your questions about prostate health, cancer screenings, and other concerns you may have (register here, if interested).
DC 37 has a partnership with MSK Direct to provide members and their families dedicated access to exceptional cancer care, support, and expert resources from the world’s leading specialists at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). If you or a family member are impacted by cancer and would like to discuss treatment options at MSK, call the dedicated MSK Direct phone line for DC 37: 833-786-3365 or visit www.mskcc.org/DC37.
