DC 37 Campaign at Battery Park City for a Fair Contract
DC 37 members and activists converged in Battery Park City on Dec. 14 to campaign for a fair contract for the Horticulture and Maintenance workers responsible for maintaining the surrounding park grounds. The workers have been negotiating with Battery Park City Authority management on their first contract for more than a year. Later, the union’s bargaining committee spoke at the Battery Park City Authority Board of Directors’ meeting.
Unions Rally to Support Healthcare Accountability Legislation
DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido spoke in favor of The Healthcare Accountability & Consumer Protection Act at a rally on City Hall steps on Feb. 23. The bill, introduced by NYC Council Member Julie Menin (left), includes measures to assess City health care spending, publicly post hospital pricing, and ensure hospital transparency. If passed, New York City becomes the first in the nation to establish an Office of Healthcare Accountability, an agency whose primary function is to protect New Yorkers from unjustified health care prices.
New Local 1087 Team Begins Work
The new NYC Prevailing Rate Employees Local 1087 leadership team was sworn in on Jan. 12. From right: President Ron Riccardi, Vice President Manuel Roman, Treasurer Thomas Turner, Recording Secretary Joseph Piscopo, Executive Board Members Fabio Dias, Roberto Perez, and Thomas Beach, and Trustees Francisco Villanueva, Vishnu Gangaram, and Stanley Skeete, all being sworn in by David Boyd, Parks Division Director. Local 1087 members work as Printing Press Operators, Clock Repairers, Furniture Maintainers, Exterminators, Locksmiths, Lead Abatement Workers, Radio Repair Mechanics, and Window Shade Repairers in various agencies throughout the city.
SSEU Local 371 Uphold MLK’s Legacy at Conference
Every January, SSEU Local 371 celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday and the inspiring legacy he left behind. President Anthony Wells and Executive Vice President Doris Murphy joined Local 1407 President and DC 37 Treasurer Maf Misbah Uddin at the 2023 Dr. MLK Jr Civil and Human Rights Conference Jan. 13-16 in Washington, D.C. Participants discussed current issues such as the essential role of unions in protecting our rights and learning to communicate workers’ needs. Inspired by Dr. King’s strong courage and resilience to fight against injustice no matter the cost, Local 371 and other DC 37 unions have fought countless battles to protect their members’ rights and benefits for many years.
